Shar-Pei Dog Coats and Skin Issues

Posted on March 24, 2010 by WayCoolDogs

The top issues of this breed are the coat and skin issues, especially those who have problematic breeding backgrounds and genetic issues. This focuses on: (1) too many Shar-Pei breeders raising low-quality breed lines; (2) the first Shar-Pei dogs to arrive in the US were of low quality, and (3) the mass production of the Shar-pei breed led to high numbers of poor breed specimens. The Chinese meaning of “Shar Pei” means “dog with sandy coat” because of the skin’s roughness and prickly feeling, which is the source of the skin and coat problems. Knowing about the Shar-Pei issues in advance will help its owner be prepared to handle any health situation that arises.
