Bo and his Obama family
Posted By Nancy Houser on September 2, 2009
When the 6-month male Portuguese water dog, Bo, first arrived at the White House on April 14, 2009, he had been more than anticipated for awhile. MORE than anticipated!
A gift from Senator Edward Kennedy and his wife to the two girls–Malia and Sasha—Bo now carries memories of the late Senator’s close friendship with President Obama. Bo is the son of Senator Kennedy’s female Portuguese water dog, himself owning several dogs of the breed.
As we all know, President Obama’s daughters chose the name Bo for the pup because first lady Michelle Obama’s father was nicknamed Diddley. The name for the dog was an apparent reference to the singer “Bo” Diddley.

Bo brings mischief, comic relief to Obama White House
Obama says walks with the family’s Portuguese water dog are a highlight of his pressure-packed days. It’s perhaps a sign of just how high-stress they are that the president even gets sentimental about the less pleasant duties of dog ownership.
“I’m the guy with the night shift,” he told one television interviewer. “We go out and we’re walking and I’m picking up poop and in the background is the beautifully lit White House. It’s quite a moment.”

I am glad the president got himself a dog. Dogs add a lot of happiness to peoples lives and I have noticed in Brooklyn were I am from more and more people are getting dogs. I wonder if a dog would make a better symbol for America than the bald eagle. I don’t think I have ever seen a bald eagle in person and I know I have never seen one make my friends happy.
