California’s Ventura County Animal Shelter Needs Help

Posted on August 25, 2009 by: WayCoolDogs

In today’s times, foreclosures and economical struggles are forcing more and more people to abandon their pets at the local county animal shelter. Unfortunately, most are now filled past the point of a full capacity with shelter official finding pet owners unable to find enough money to care for their pets who are either sick or old.

Earlier this week, an older black Labrador was left at the side of the road near one shelter (Ventura County in southern California). Beneath him was a Chihuahua that refuses to leave his side with the two now sharing a kennel.

A picture of animal shelters all over the United States, the local country shelter in California’s Ventura County is just one of many who are in desperate trouble to have (1) their animals adopted out, (2) monies received for food and supplies, or (3) plenty of volunteer work. By working your own local hub area and within a half-an-hour to an hour distance, this can easily be remedied by caring pet lovers who will take a step forward of five hours a week. If that cannot be done, heck…try one hour.

This particular shelter in California tries to place all its animals, either with a new owner or a rescue program. Last year, more than 13,200 live animals were brought to the shelter, and of those, about 9,000 were dogs and cats. It’s an increase of about 1,000 over the previous year, they said.

Of the 5,200 dogs that were adoptable, 2,800 dogs — or 54 percent — found new owners, Nolan said. Of the about 3,300 cats that were adoptable, only 1,100 were adopted — or 33 percent.
(We at Way Cool Dogs had sent an email to the Ventura Shelter, telling them we would take the Lab and Chihuahua so they could stay together if they could get them to Nebraska.

We received a prompt email back, with good news:

Thank you so much! We were able to place them in homes. Sadly not together but they seem to be doing ok separately.

Adopt a needy pet pat

The Ventura County Animal Regulation Department’s 5th annual adopt-athon was held on August 2, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at its Camarillo Animal Shelter.

People adopting animals received gift bags for their new pets, discounted adoption fees, free rabies vaccinations, free microchips and coupons for free veterinary visits.

The event had entertainment, vendors, a silent auction and drawings to support rescue efforts.

The shelter was at 600 Aviation Drive. To view the animals or for more information, go to http://www.vcar.us.
