A Dog Story “I got you now, you’re my prisoner!”

Posted on October 27, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

He was very weak when they brought him in, and his coat was dry and matted, so after a couple of days on the drip to build up his strength, he was bathed and trimmed down, and started to feel lots better. I actually got confused, as I had been looking after a smallish white [...]

A Dog Opens the Door

Posted on October 19, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

Life changes for people when a therapy dog walks into the room. Everyone who has witnessed therapy dogs interacting with people testifies to the positive effects created by the human-canine connection. It is not a matter of age; the special qualities found in dogs can touch people at all stages of life. For the [...]

A Dog Story: The 100-day Dogs, Tiger and Sheba

Posted on October 13, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

We called them the ‘hundred day dogs’ because they were brought in to board by their owner for three months. They were separated at first, but both pined so they ended up together in a cage and were quite content, although it was a bit of a squeeze, due to the fact that Tiger was, [...]

Lessons I Learned from a Blind and Deaf Dog

Posted on October 11, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

It was the winter of Harvey Wallbanger, and Harvey would teach me more about patience and acceptance than I could ever learn from a human being. It wasn’t just winter. It was THE winter of all winters. I could not see out my windows through the mountains of snow. My other dogs found it to be lots of fun maneuvering through the obstacle course of frozen tundra that was now my back yard. Yet for an older dog with no vision or hearing, such conditions required a human’s guidance and assistance. No more opening the door in the morning to let the dogs out in nothing but a t-shirt and fuzzy slippers, coffee cup in hand, eyes slowly adjusting to the morning light.

A Dog Story: Flossie…Timid but Lovable

Posted on October 06, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

Flossie looked for all the world as if someone had taken two dogs and joined their heads down the middle. The only other unusual thing about her was that the toes on one front paw were all twisted, probably the result of having been crushed by a heavy shoe, or a car tyre, or by some weapon used on her for fun, because in Jamaica any animal (it applies to children too) who looks different from the rest is mocked, made fun of, picked on and abused in any number of horrible ways.

A Loving Home for a Pit Bull Named Izzy

Posted on September 01, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

This is not your normal love story. This story begins with a crazy moment in time where a dog needed to be saved and I stepped up to save her. See, the thing with Isabella, now named Izzy, is that she was in the City of Hartford Animal Shelter and her 10 days was up. It was either she gets adopted THAT day or she will be put to sleep. Poor Izzy wasn’t even adopted out after being put on the 6 am news.

A Dog Story: Irresistible Wolf-like Chico

Posted on August 31, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

I don’t usually walk boarding dogs, but Chico was there for a long stay and I knew he would need the exercise.  Plus he was just gorgeous. And irresistible.  His cage was one of those that had only one door, whereas the best ones have an upper and a lower door, so that you can [...]

6 Top Breeds for Working Dogs in the South

Posted on August 23, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

For those of you that have even a cursory knowledge of dog breeds, the word “working” and “dog” make us think of the breed group, such as the Hunting Group, the Toy Group, etc. The working dogs I am talking about today are not going to be limited to those breeds that are in the Working Group. I am going to be talking about whatever dog breeds are best, regardless of group, at working in the Southern United States.

A Dog Story: Boysie, the rescued German Shepherd

Posted on August 17, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

You’d think if you were driving a car it would be hard not to see a very large german shepherd in the road. Maybe whoever hit Boysie did it deliberately – we will never know – but he was brought in by a kind taxi driver who saw that he was badly injured and not able to move. But Boysie turned out to have a tremendous will to live. There were some who wanted him put down right away but thankfully the others prevailed; he was given pain medication and antibiotics, and we watched and waited.

Dog Story: A Great Pyrenee named Houdini

Posted on July 07, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

When my wife Cheria retired from her job a few years back she decided to volunteer a few days each week at our local animal shelter. Her task is a simple one: take photos of the dogs and cats that are brought in and place their profiles and pictures on the PetFinder website in order to help [...]

Home for Lola, the Weimaraner-Doberman Pinscher

Posted on July 05, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

She was a very large, ungainly dog, looking like a mixture of Weimaraner-Doberman Pinscher. The most remarkable thing about her was the color of her fur, which went from reddish to a sort of yellow ochre (first photo), giving the impression that she had been daubed by an artist who was trying out the various colors in his palette.

A Dog Story: Nova, the Lovable Pit-Bull Mix

Posted on June 23, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

Nova’s problem though was a nasty skin condition, which gave her an itchy red rash, and was making her fur fall out. They did several skin scrapings and couldn’t find out what it was. She was given weekly triatix baths, which didn’t do much, and then I got the idea of rubbing her with aloe vera, of which, thankfully, I have a good supply at home.

Understanding Dog Supplements

Posted on June 23, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

… when we think of “supplements”, we may be drawn to an image of what a body builder might use to “pump up” his workout routine. Or maybe we’ve always been skeptical about using supplements for ourselves, and have never even thought about giving them to our furry friends. But no matter what reservations you might have surrounding supplements, it is important to understand the dietary and health benefits that supplements can have for your dog.

Job Interview with an Anonymous Veterinarian

Posted on June 21, 2011 by WayCoolDogs

Most people have very few ideas what goes on behind the scene of a vet clinic and what it takes to become a vet. The following is a job interview with a professional veterinarian who wishes to remain anonymous, in an interview with JustJobs.com Academy.
