It is always exciting to get a new dog and integrate them into your life. As any dog owner will tell you, getting them some immediate training is a must. The truth is that many dog owners don’t have the time to invest in the training. So it is then necessary to find a trainer. When investing in getting a trainer it is important to find the right one. If you are not comfortable with how someone is handling the training, you will be looking for another trainer quickly. So here are some things you should look for when shopping for the right trainer.
1. What kinds of training do they offer?
If all you are looking for is basic obedience training then you probably don’t want to go to someone that specializes in gun dog training unless they are well rounded in all types of dog training. If you want to train your dog to be a guard dog then you will need to find someone that specializes in it. If your dog is a puppy then all you will need is obedience training at first and as they mature you can go into other training as you see fit. Other types of training include agility training and advanced tricks. It is always best to get your new dog basic obedience even if you decide to skip any other kinds of training. Then if you want more advanced training afterwards, you have gotten the basics out of the way
2. Is your trainer qualified to handle your dog?
Don’t be afraid to ask your trainer for references and to see certifications so you can have piece of mind when letting them train your dog. It is also possible that the trainer has been doing this for a long time and is well known by breeders and other people in the industry. That is why references are important. If they are a reputable trainer they shouldn’t be offended by your asking
3. How do you find a trainer?
One of the best ways is to start with your local veterinarian and those that work in pet stores. Usually you can get a pretty good set of recommendations this way. You can also try other dog owners as well. If they have had a good experience with a particular trainer then they will be more than happy to refer you to them. Don’t just go with the first trainer recommended to you. Get a good list of trainers in your area that you can visit. If you find that more than one person is recommending the same trainer to you, chances are that they are a safe bet and should be the first one you go see.
Once you find a trainer that you want, it is best to attend a session or two to see how the trainer handles the dogs they are training. Every trainer has a different approach to how they train and you want to make sure that your dog is in good hands.
