Holly’s Neighborhood: “Asleep at the food dish…”

Posted on August 24, 2009 by: WayCoolDogs

I really don’t have a lot to say, other than I am REALLY tired. I gave up cat chasin’ for some old fashioned catching mice in the kitchen until wee hours of the morning when I was so rudely awoken.

smallcolored_LazyBumDoglogowhitebkgWhen the grandmother passed away awhile back, we inherited her old black and white cat, Sassy, who thinks she is death on mice. HA! She thinks! We had to rescue her out of the local shelters as one of the loving brothers (and I say that rather ‘sarcastically) didn’t like her– or any other animal for that matter– and off she went.

It didn’t take long before the old lady jumped into her ol’ clunker pick-up to get her, believe you me!  So here she is….allowed to run all over the farm with a freely opened window to the great outdoors, with me tagging along  behind her to make sure she stays out of trouble. Trouble is, she’s lightening fast and I can never catch up with her.

This is a cat who belonged to a woman who refused to allow her even NEAR the trailer door to the outside. Out here, she thinks she is Annie Oakley of the mice world with her dead-eyed fangs! Heck…she doesn’t even have any front CLAWS! So how dangerous can she be? Well, somebody forgot to tell the mice that, as her mouse average is pretty good…for a CAT!

So I spent the entire night chasing mice in the kitchen just to show her up a peg or two ….problem is, I never caught any ’cause I fell asleep. With my head in the food dish. NOT something you want everyone to know on the Internet, for sure, but here it is in all its glory.

A moment I am not proud of, I swear I had never moved my eyes from under the refrigerator forever. Next thing I knew,  it was 2 am in the morning and I was being shook awake rudely with this message in my ears, “Holly…didn’t you see that mouse eating out of the food dish in front of your nose?” Well…UMM….no…UMM…I didn’t. Long story, ol’ lady!

Sassy and I get along when we are in the house even though she is a stupid cat and I am an exceptionally intelligent dachshund. We sleep in the same bed at night…so what choice do I have, anyway! But once she goes out the window through the art room, I feel she is “fair game” in my book if I could just catch her. To her we are playing, but I am dead serious.

Problem is, she thinks she is better than me at catchin’ mice and that just isn’t allowed around here. I have an image to uphold! Not many of the wild cats like her, so I guess I’m kinda feelin’ sorry for her at this time…and she is pretty nice to me. Leaves leftover cat food on her plate that someone has to finish off. Moi’ take care of that!

It DOES pay off to have a finicky cat around the house who is not afraid of any dog on the property and never quite eats all her food…probably because of all the mice she eats. Or so she says!

Sassy_windowWith Sassy easily catching from two to four mice a day, counting then  inside and outside, I realize I may have set my sights to high…especially when I cannot seem to stay away at night when they are the most active.

It’s just a small problem….I will just have to take a few more “cat naps” (get it? haha) tomorrow to catch up on my sleep.

Yawn

Well,  I had better get my head out of the food bowl and say good night. Besides, the sneaky little mice ate most of it.  I need a little shut eye to beat the latest quota of mice Sassy has set upon herself….in bed this time with my butt high up on the pillow! See you next  Tuesday with another story to tell.

OH, yeah…check these cards out. They’re a little over a dollar each but what the heck…a dog’s gotta live. They say it all, believe me! Besides, they make wonderful gifts for people who don’t like dogs…ha ha! Good night!!    And some pretty cool adjustable store’n feed bowls to NOT go to sleep in!
