Holly’s Neighborhood: “Bad to the Bone”

Posted By Nancy Houser on October 9, 2009

Last Monday, I received the book gift “Bad to the Bone“, written by Bo Hoefinger of Dogster.com “For the Love of Dog” blog.  My favorite boy toy dog-friend, for sure!! Holly_thumbnail_ logo

BUT once we got the book, I had to almost BEG to read it, with the old ladies fighting to read it first….before me even!

To set the record straight, the book had been sent from Bo to ME, not the old ladies who think they take care of me (in reality, it is more the other way around!).  Even though Bo said in his private note to me I should share it with them, that didn’t mean they should read it BEFORE me! I let them know this is so many words by barking every time they picked the book up….I am not stupid, you know. I can see his picture on front!

BAD TO THE BONE, Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger

Once I got the message across, and was able to have the book read to me out-loud (I think they got tired of the continuous shrill, heartbreaking pain-filled barking)…I had moments of laughing hysterically at some parts and crying my heart out at others. The book is about my friend Bo’s life with the book originating in the shelter, who was contemplating suicide by trading Greenies for chocolate bars from the shelter’s head-dog Candyman to prevent a life in the joint (can you imagine the depths of dispair?).

“I approached Candyman during exercise time in the yard. While the other dogs were working on their begging routines, he let on to me that he had a shipment of Hershey’s dark chocolate  candy bars  on the way. For the right price he would let me have them. I knew, as did he, chocolate will kill a canine quicker than a game of “chase the cat” in traffice. Yeah, that quickly.”

Thankfully, he was rescued by the Hoefingers who have become his entire life…and what a life it is! When his mom,  Lisa, got a job which took her out of the home, she got Bo a cat they named Moose for company, even though she was terrified of cats. What love and loyalty! MOOSE!!  Can you see it?

But … I shouldn’t talk as I have three cats and a complete old dog rescue for company….they can show me love by making me the only dog! Ha! But what was really sad was when Bo’s mom was found to have cancer, and what Bo went through.

The book is major league funny even with the truthful moments, such as when Lisa brought Moose home in an old car with no A/C and the cat got out of the crate which ended up …… well, you read it. The other part I thought was funny was when Bo drove up on a highway island in the middle of an ice-storm ….what was Bo doing driving a car?

Well…you had better read that chapter also. I plan on reading it again, and again! Once the old ladies get done, that is.
