Holly’s Neighborhood: “The Love of Nature”

holly's_neighborhood“Be tuff ! The “dog days” of summer can be wuff !”

June bugs are a sign of summer, along with June strawberries and hot days. Hot afternoons are my favorite time when I nap under the chair in an air-conditioned room. Ah….what a dog’s life! But peaceful moments like this are rare, as living in the country is not as calm and wonderful as the writers make it appear to be.

A Promenade of June Bugs

Watching the nightly promenade of June bugs are like watching live comedies on television, with their appearance making one of our rat terriers, Josie, just plain ecstatic with happiness. A dedicated bug catcher from way back, she thinks June bugs are the caviar of them all and chases until about four in the morning…steadily. The rest of us dogs chase Josie– we could care less about the bugs–but it is fun for us all!

I have found out that people do not find them so enjoyable, especially when the window is left open in the bedroom with the ceiling light on at ten o’clock at night. Right before bedtime, about a dozen of them were found caught in the afghan spread out at the bottom of the bed…the rest hadn’t lit yet but were flying around in a room with 8′ high ceilings. This would not have been so funny, but the chunky little old lady swinging the fly swatter was only 4′ 11″ tall.  For awhile  I thought the hurricane winds had arrived in full force. Of curse, Josie and the rest of us dogs were helping out as much as we could.

The Terrifying Garter Snake

June bugs are not as funny as the appearance of garter snakes though. The other ‘lady of the house, Sandy, hates snakes with a passion. Not really “hates”….but is afraid of them…totally. Different terminology here. She had stepped out of the front gate the other day and just barely missed stepping on one laid out across the bricks while sunbathing in all its glory.

When we heard that ear-shattering shriek of terror, every dog on the property came running to see what was going on.  From that moment on, we were all on guard as we watched it slithering away, muttering to itself,  “What was all the fuss about?”
