Flea infestation can turn out to be a nightmare not only for your dog but for you as well. These little bugs are visible to the naked eye and can give you a really tough time. Research has indicated that there are almost 2000 different species of fleas.

These fleas survive on the blood of your pet and you can easily identify their presence by your dog’s constant scratching and itching of the affected area. Cases of acute infestation by flea allergy dermatitis may also lead to the loss of hair of your canine companion.

Measures of flea control for dogs abound in the market and ranges from a variety of natural products to topical and oral medication. You can take your dog for a medicated dip which serves as an effective treatment for flea infestation. A monthly dose of lufenuron also serves as a dog flea control measure.

In areas that experience warm weather conditions throughout the year, lufenuron is administered at regular intervals. On the other hand, areas that experience chilling winters and the dip in the mercury levels is enough to threaten the existence of the fleas, the dose is administered at the time of the flea season. Topical medication like Frontline has a long lasting effect and therefore you can do away with its application once in every two months.

For effective flea control for dogs, it is necessary to identify the areas that are more prone to getting infected. These are identified as hot spots. Application of melaleuca or tea tree oil to these parts mixed with water produces desired results. If you notice shakes or heavy drooling in your pet, it is advised that you take your pet to the vet. These may well be signals of chemical poisoning. If ignored, these may lead to convulsions in your dog. In a worst case scenario, your dog may also collapse.

It is important to adopt adequate measures before the situation spins out of control. There are several insect growth regulators available in the market that prevents the growth of flea. Medications like Advantage and Frontline also help to curb the growth of these parasites.
