Inexpensive At-Home DNA Service Provides New Understanding for Mixed-Breed Dogs
Posted By Nancy Houser on September 15, 2009
A new DNA dog test that owners can do at home has been developed from Mars Veterinary ™ as a comprehensive mixed-breed DNA cheek swab test to better explain the ancestry of individual pet owners’ mixed-breed dogs. Considered one of the top canine genetic breed identification markets in Mars ® Incorporate, Mars Veterinary ™ is a global leader in pet care.
The new DNA product made its debut at SuperZoo ® which is one of the pet industry’s largest trade shows. With the DNA tests labeled as “Wisdom Panel ™ Insights”, it demonstrates the advancements being made in canine genetic testing technology, helping to access breed detection in a convenient manner and at a low expensive.
MIXED BREED FINDINGS
Approximately half the canine pets in the United States are mixed breed with about 86% not sure what breed their pet’s composition consists of. Wisdom Panel ™ Insights can determine over 170 breeds with one swipe inside the dog’s cheek, basing their finds on the largest dog database on the market.
Once the DNA is mailed back to the company, the dog owners will be mailed the results in approximately three weeks in an official Ancestry Report with their dog’s genetic background in print. This report will help the pet owner better understand who their dog is and what its natural tendencies are. Based on this report, they can create a particular breed’s training, exercise and nutrition program to fit the animal’s specific needs.
“We’re excited to give dog owners easier and more affordable access to the best-in-class canine genetic analysis to help them understand what breeds make their dog so special,” said Dr. Neale Fretwell, chief geneticist at Mars Veterinary. “But it’s not just about curiosity. The smarter you are about your dog’s past, the smarter you can be about his future.”
Wisdom Panel Insights is now available for mixed-breed dogs across the U.S.
for only $79.99 online at www.wisdompanel.com. For those who have AKC registered dogs, DNA kits can be obtained for $35 at AKC DNA Kit.
