PRODUCT REVIEW: “Wellness Pet Food”

Posted on December 18, 2009 by Nancy Houser

We were asked to review an assortment of dog food and cat food products by Wellness Natural Food Products, as we have so many pets here at our rescue. Personally, we have had a variety of pet  products  over the years, always searching for something healthy that our four-legged buddies find delicious.

Unfortunately, quite a bit of the foods and snacks that were healthy our pets found to taste rather  ’icky’ — according to them!! After a bite or two they would many times spit it out and turn away! No matter how healthy they were, if nobody would eat them they were worthless and a waste of money for us.

But Wellness believes that “by feeding a natural, super-premium food you have recognized that your companion’s health and longevity is directly linked to the quality of the food you feed.” Once we sampled their products, we began to see why.

Wellness “Duck and Sweet Potato Formula”

One of the samples we received was a 12.5 oz. can of Duck and Sweet Potato Formula, but their canned dog food is also available in 6 oz. cans for smaller breeds or finicky eaters.

The dog we chose as our sampler was Jasmine (J.J.), our cream Shiba-Inu who was extremely picky to the point of starvation at times if she became tired of a certain food or we did not have what she chose to eat. We knew that if she would eat it, it had to taste good.

The first bite, she devoured it and licked the plate clean — something she did not do with many other new foods. A natural food for dogs, it had duck in it plus duck broth, turkey, chicken liver, whitefish, ground barley, sweet potatoes, carrots, ground flaxseed, and many other other things.

The major disadvantage I had was that it was not available locally to our location. In Nebraska, Hastings and Lincoln were the closest I could get to it and I could not order it online. Other than driving over an hour to get a couple cans for one dog, it is unavailable in the Kearney or Holdrege area for her.

The sample of Wellness Chicken & Herring Formula Cat Food we received was in a 5.5 oz. can of natural food for cats, containing chicken, chicken liver, whitefish, chicken broth, herring, carrots, sweet potatoes, natural chicken flavor, squash, zucchini, cranberries, blueberries, and many other products to entice the flavor.

The best thing is that the Wellness Natural Cat Food meets the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrition Profiles for maintenance.

Available in many flavors and sizes of cans (3 oz., 5.5 oz. and 12 oz. ), our two black cats who were 13-years of age loved it, but our younger cat of 4-years did not like it at all.  But as we all know, cats have a finicky reputation and one would need to maybe purchase the 3 oz. cans first to see if they would like it before going to a larger can.

Overall, the taste of the Wellness Natural Pet Food was found to be good as our cats tried to get into the Wellness Natural Dog Food, and our dogs would try to steal the Wellness Natural Cat Food — plus liking their own.  I consider their products  something I would purchase if it was closer in location due to the excellent taste and natural healthy products they were made of, in addition to such a wide variety to choose from.
