Symptoms of Dogs Who Are Afraid of Storms

Posted By Nancy Houser on June 17, 2009

Symptoms of dogs who are afraid of storms demonstrate their signs in varying ways. Considered part of the noise phobia, dogs afraid of storms may also be afraid of gunshots, cars backfiring, fireworks, large trucks thundering by, or any other extremely loud noise. Some cases have demonstrated that a dog’s fear of storms may be because their owners show signs of storm fears. Overall–thunderstorm phobias of dogs can be complex, depending on the dog involved, yet is considered the most common. What needs to be understood is that the loudness of the trigger (thunder, lightning, gunshot, etc) will determine how intense and severe the symptom is and the dog’s reaction.

SYMPTOMS OF DOGS AFRAID OF STORMS

  • Digging to “escape” from the noise of a storm may cause damage to furniture, windows, doors or fences.
  • Desperate “hiding” attempts in corners, under beds or furniture, or running from one area to another.
  • Exaggerated fears of objects or strangers may develop in dogs with noise phobias.
  • Excessive and desperate “chewing” in an attempt for the dog to deal with the loud noises. They chew almost desperately, with varying severity and intensity.
  • A frantic “look” on the face with terror in they eyes is displayed.
  • “Toileting abnormally and uncontrollably” demonstrates just how much in terror a dog who is afraid of storms is. They may go in their crate or just about anywhere, as they are running and hiding to get away what is causing their fear.
  • Dog may become completely lodged due to excessive running away out of fear. This may prevent the dog from being able to move or escape their confinement.
  • Complete “immobilization” of the animal as if “dumb with fear”.
  • Any or all of these signs may show up before the owner realizes a storm is coming. Always be alert and familiar with abnormal behavior of the dog.
