As studies show a strong link between animal abuse and domestic abuse and violence, Senator Wielechowski of Alaska hoped that SB 214 will reduce the violence in communities by treating “malicious acts of animal cruelty ” as felony offences.

Located in a New Jersey trash bin of a 22-story building, a tiny, dehydrated and emaciated pit bull mix was found wrapped in a plastic trash bag right before St. Patrick’s Day — within hours of death. According to the rescuer, it looked as if he had been placed in the bag and tossed down the trash chute. The story hit the Internet within hours, with animal activist groups getting involved immediately.

The woman is the primary caregiver in 73 percent of pet-owning households, with battered women living in their cars for months with their pets, waiting for a safe house to open up that is pet-friendly. Approximately 87 percent of the violence against pets occur in front of the abused adult, while 75 percent occurs in front of the children — in order to coerce and control through manipulation and fear.
