“Tale of the Three Little Dogs”
Posted on September 30, 2009 by: WayCoolDogs
At one time, fairy tales used to tell a moral story about life. Today, what better way than to teach us about financial lessons than the Tale of the Three Little Pigs. But instead of the three little pigs, we are going to talk about The Tale of the Three Little Dogs, hoping that each one of us can identify ourselves in their story of building three dog houses.
The Dog House Made of Straw
The first little dog chose straw as his building material. After all, in a recession what better material to use a material that is the cheapest and easiest material to build with?
Many reasons were the basis of his choice. Primary was to get it done as quickly as possible so he could play fetch, chew on his favorite bones and go on long walks with his owner. He wanted his dog house to look good but did not want to spend a lot of time constructing it nor having to do a lot of hard physical work. This would be called today as thinking “short-term” instead of “long-term.” The strength or durability of his dog home was not important, nor its structural integrity.
The little dog wanted the appearance of a nice home but did not want to put a lot into it as many people do today. Having a good time is more important than working hard, planning, setting goals and having a purpose in life. The slightest emergency will make the straw house blow away, with about 1/3 of people today living in straw houses. No data is available on how many dogs actually build straw dog-houses.
The Dog House Made of Wood
As we all know, the second little pig built his home with sticks, so of course our second little dog will build his home with wood. It is a stronger material than straw, and will actually last longer. So….on the surface it is a better choice as a building material than building a dog house with straw. Not a bad decision, other than it costs more and the construction of a wooden dog house will take a little more effort than quickly putting one up of straw.
A dog house built with wood will not solve a lot of problems that could happen in the emergencies of today—floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, mud slides and fires. It’s good, but not as good as it could be. It looks better on the outside but will give a false sense of security, with a foundation just as weak as the straw dog house.
In today’s recession, a family with two incomes can easily live in a wooden house. Because of the extra income, they will have a small margin of comfort. But if one of the individuals becomes ill or loses their job, that margin will disappear. Due to the dual income over the years, they will have money invested in their retirement funding, but will not have sufficient reserve savings for emergencies that can always happen during a recession.
The Dog House Made of Brick
The third dog build his dog house of brick, considered the most expensive material that can be used in building. It also requires skilled labor for its construction and lots of hard work. To build a brick dog house requires lots of planning and saving, while the other two dogs played and enjoyed life as if there was always tomorrow. But the third little dog was wise and knew better, choosing a safer and more sturdy dog house to live in while using wisdom and diligent work throughout his life.
The enemy, disguised as job loss, home mortgages, many financial worries, weather catastrophes, and medical emergencies, could never get in the third dog’s home. No matter how hard they tried to blow it down, no matter how much they tried to trick the little dog, the dog saw through the deception and was secure in his dog house against them all.
A home built financially strong in a recession is the same way as the little dogs building their dog houses. Take the time to plan wisely for a safe home and financial security by looking into the future at all times. Today wolves are at both the front and back door for many people, with unwise individuals who built with straw and wood very fearful for their future. Plan wisely…..
