The AKGmag.com dog moments….

Writing the 136 articles for AKGmag.com was not only fun but allowed me to warm up for the Way Cool Dogs website that I began right afterward. Here are a few of the dog articles I started with….so bear with me!

Feeding Dogs When The Economy is Down

I found out during an ice storm that lasted over 19 days that feeding a 75-dog dog rescue was not only possible but manageable, which I had seriously doubted as we had no power or water. In the middle of blizzards and ice storms over that black period, we bucketed gallons of water from our neighbor’s well both morning and night. Everyone in the Nebraska farming area worked together, sharing with each other what we could spare.

About the Police Dog

The police dog was first used by the police in the countries of Belgium and Germany in the late 1800s. It was not until the 1900s that this field of work had spread into other countries—Italy, England, Australia, France, and Hungary. It had reached the United States by 1907 when the New York City Police Department first began to use the police dog as a force against crime, gaining a strong foothold around the 1970s. Truth be known, the police dog gives more of itself to the human than any other working dog on a day-by-day basis.

Dogs—Beast of Burden

At one time dogs were considered the beast of burden for mankind, turning spits and pulling carts for transportation. Today many breeds are considered work animals: herding cattle and sheep; working for the police and military; and helping those with disabilities. Meanwhile, on a daily basis we become more and more aware of dogs that are being mistreated and neglected due to the internet and television, allowing us to see what is going on throughout the country.  History has shown us that dogs have worked for people in many ways, adapting slightly over the years since they were first domesticated.

Animal Abusers

Recent statistics have shown that animal abusers are more likely to commit violent crimes, as much as five times more against people and as much as four times more against property crimes, as compared to individuals who do not have a history of animal abuse. Studies over the past 25 years in the fields of criminology, psychology and sociology show us that violent offenders have a childhood and adolescent history of repeated animal cruelty. This is a connection which has been recognized by the FBI since the 1970s when it performed an analysis of serial killers and their early lives, who were found to eventually switch their abuse from animals to people—elder abuse, spouse abuse, and child abuse.

Having to Euthanize the Family Pet

“Like all vets, I hated doing this, painless though it was, but to me there has always been a comfort in the knowledge that the last thing these helpless animals knew was the sound of a friendly voice, and the touch of a gentle hand.” James Herriot All Things Wise and Wonderful

Because of medical advances and healthy nutrition, dogs and pets are living longer lives now than even before. Yet when it is time to have them put to sleep due to old age, illness or injury, it is always a difficult personal decision. Some wish for their dogs not to suffer and have them put to sleep before they suffer too much. Others cannot make that decision and allow them to die naturally.

Signs that an elderly dog is ready to pass over naturally involves many things: losing interest in normal activities they usually enjoy doing; refusal to eat or drink; depression; discomfort; or severe pain. Having a close relationship with not only the dog but the family veterinarian will make this transition much easier to make, with professional assistance and advice helping making some major decisions.
