Yorkshire Terrier Puppies for Sale
Posted on April 28, 2010 by: WayCoolDogs
Some of the most popular puppies on the dog market today are the little Yorkshire Terrier puppies for sale, with their miniature cuteness and sassy attitude – and a heart as big as gold. They do not shed much having little dander, making them an excellent pet for those with allergies. Their small size overwhelms prospective Yorkie owners instantly, making it a constant favorite of pet owners and dog fanciers. But somebody forgot to tell the little Yorkshire Terrier it was small in size, as true to the terrier heritage this little dog always seems to be in trouble somewhere – busy and inquisitive in nature all the time.
An excellent watch dog, the Yorkshire Terrier puppy grows into an extremely playful dog with a high energy need that will require a pretty active lifestyle, regardless how small they are. The little Yorkies have a high grooming requirement once they grow up, due to their long hair. When born, they almost look like a little fuzzy blackish poodle, with many Yorkie owners keeping them in a puppy cut until they are about a year old.
Quality Yorkshire Terrier puppies for sale run from $1,000 to $2,000 dollars each with an AKC registry behind them. Ones that can be bought online for $200 to $400 dollars probably do not have a show dog background and quality, and have not been tested for major health concerns. If your little Yorkshire Terrier is labeled as a teacup Yorkie and under three pounds, shaking, slightly lifeless with lifeless eyes, do not buy it – unless you feel sorry for it and are prepared for losing it or spending lots of money at the veterinarian for a very long time. Slightly larger sized Yorkshire Terrier puppies will be healthier and sturdier than ones that are unnaturally small.
History of the Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier breed is known for producing excellent Yorkshire Terrier puppies for sale, a historical product of purposeful cross-breeding between a variety of terriers for a working class dog –Skye, Paisley, Maltese, Clydesdale, rough-coated English black & tan, and the Dandie Dinmont. But nothing was as dominant as the small Waterside Terrier which weighed around ten pounds and was blue-gray in color with long hair.
The origin of the Yorkshire Terrier was in England around the 1800s, developed as a small vermin dog. Because the little dog was considered as having “common roots,” the rich class of dog fanciers would have nothing to do with it for a long time, feeling it was beneath them. Over time, its beauty and wins in the show ring attracted the hardest of hearts of the rich. Today, the Yorkshire Terrier is used as a companion dog and show dog, typically weighing from four to ten pounds.
Yorkshire Temperament
The temperament of the little Yorkshire Terrier is that of a terrier – busy, hyper, loyal, entertains himself with nothing, always into something, yappie unless taught otherwise, an excellent watch dog but not too much in the protection area due to their size, not too friendly toward strange people or dogs, slightly difficult to train, has no cold tolerance and only slightly more of a tolerance to heat, and highly intelligent. The rest of the time, get used to carrying it around or holding it in your lap.
Yorkshire Terrier Upkeep
Not a dog that is able to live outdoors, the Yorkshire Terrier upkeep involves indoor living and lots of toys and games to play with. They are pretty good about amusing themselves, which is good since they are so energetic and busy. Walking with a leash should be started as a young puppy, as they enjoy short walks and spending time with their owner who they adore. Their coat needs brush every other day if not daily. If possible, professional grooming should be done every couple of months to keep the long hair under control, the ears with long hair cleaned and toenails trimmed.
Yorkshire Terrier Health
There are several health concerns to watch for in Yorkshire Terriers. Some major concerns are: portacaval stunt, tracheal collapse, and Leggs-Perthes. Patellar luxation is considered a minor concern, with PRA occasionally seen in the breed. Tests that should be done on the Yorkie parents and pup are the liver ultrasound, knees, and eyes.
Accepted Yorkshire Terrier Colors
All Yorkshire Terrier puppies for sale will be black. The AKC standard colors for a Yorkshire Terrier adult dog are blue and tan, blue and gold, black and tan, and black and gold. Many other colors are available when choosing a puppy from a litter of Yorkshires Terrier puppies for sale, and that is perfectly fine. However, they may not be accepted in an AKC dog show.
